The Area

The village at Cookingham Greene is named for the two families who last owned the land upon which the Village has been built.

The Greene family established the apple orchards which once lined High Street. The streets and ways of Cookingham Greene and Apple Ridge are named for the varieties of apples that were grown here. The house and barns at the intersection of High Street and High Street Extension belonged to the Greene family. The elder Mr. Greene was a senior executive for Proctor and Gamble, Cambridge, MA and commuted by train from Ashland to work, a service that is finally restarting after over 50 years.

The Cookingham family owned the large colonial farm house and barns at the intersection of Frankland Road and Cross Street just over the line in Hopkinton.

Cookingham Greene is situated in a historical part of New England. High Street, on which Cookingham Greene fronts, is a scenic way that was first laid out in the 1640’s.
